Treblinka was an extermination camp, built and operated by Nazi Germany in occupied Poland during World War II. It was situated in a secret forest location around 80 km from Warsaw. The camp operated between 23 July 1942 and 19 October 1943. During this time, it is estimated that between 700,000 and 900,000 Jews were killed in its gas chambers. More Jews were killed at Treblinka than at any other Nazi extermination camp apart from Auschwitz.
The camp consisted of two separate units. Treblinka I was a forced-labour camp, whose prisoners worked in the gravel pit, irrigation area or in the forest; Treblinka II was the extermination camp.
During the liquidation of the camp the crew destroyed all of the camp documentation in order to cover up the traces of their activities. At the end, they set fire to the barracks.
In Treblinka II the grounds where human ashes were buried was ploughed and planted with lupine. The camp bakery was rebuilt into a house for a Ukrainian family whose task was to protect the grounds, which then resembled a farm. The farmhouse was built from the bricks of the demolished gas chambers.
The Treblinka memorial is a symbolic place marked by 17,000 stones where you can feel the weight of the massive tragedy which happened here during World War II.
